Re: Shamanism and Drumming
Thu, August 30, 2007 - 2:29 PMI was just involved in a small percussion session with a group working under a Toltec Shaman, Koyote . . . I have been in several drumming circles with a more tribal musical intent, but this experience was very different . . . Koyote is a storyteller, and spoke in a rhythmics, archetypal fashion while the group used various percussion instruments in accompaniment . . . as far as I know, very few participants were musically literate, and the beginning was pretty rough . . . however after a short time there was something very magical happening in the space . . . we lost consciousness of our ego's and became one with the storyteller . . . the timing and energy was in perfect unison with the story, punctuating, emphasizing and allowing space for the voice of silence . . .
Personally, I am very interested in Sami and Mongolian shamanism, and use of the drum, as well as the concept of Riding the Drum . . .

Bonnie-The Sami have such a beautiful tradition imo. that sadly has been abused by the Northern European countries in which they live. One can be reminded of the way the Aborignes were treated in Australia .The simplicity in their music, artwork etc. are maybe what people should investigate for what other tribal groups might have been like many moons ago.
The knowledge of Picts, or other peoples of ancient Europe are left greatly to scholarly speculations, and personal Gnosis of European Mystical folks that like fast drum beats aka those that take weekend "Shamanic" retreats. You know people with names like Oakbear Stonehenge!
As far as I know Very few outsiders have been fully introduced to the Sami tradtions let us all know what You find. -

Thu, March 20, 2008 - 1:54 PMEric-For some reason the rattles or the bones are what work for me. Dancing into trance with the land. etc. Opening up levels of awareness to connections with the "great family". -

Re: Shamanism and Drumming
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 2:07 PMEric-When I found that I could verify information from the otherworlds thats when I felt pulled into all these practices. I plunged into places in the otherworlds that later I found within Norse Myth. The word Shamanry that Little Lightning Bolt uses sits well with me.
An interesting note "Shamans" that met up in Siberia from around the world found themselves arguing about who had the best drums while people gathered for a healing ritual . The weather had an effect on the drums...the American "Shaman" whipped out a tic-tac box and used that for the healing rite!
